Keep the original fields
Retain manufacturer, family, color number and any lot information before removing a skein band. A bobbin’s visual color is not a substitute for those identifiers.
Do not assume length
A partly used bobbin is not a full 8 meter skein. Record actual remaining length if measured, or mark it estimated or unknown rather than counting every bobbin as new stock.
Avoid condition claims
We have not tested winding tension, crease effects or long-term storage. An organizer photograph is an illustration, not a guarantee that thread remains unchanged or that two bobbins match.
Keep the label beyond the bobbin
A bobbin can separate loose thread from its original packaging. Copy the manufacturer, family, color number and known lot information before discarding a band. Note whether remaining length was measured or merely estimated. A color-only label cannot recover the original fiber, construction or exact replacement identity.
A useful bobbin record
Use separate fields for manufacturer, family, color, original package length, known remainder and any supplied lot identifier. For a partly used bobbin, mark remainder as measured, estimated or unknown. Keeping the confidence label matters:an estimate of 2 m should not silently become a verified 2 m during the next project inventory. Save the original band when practical.
Do not total bobbins as full skeins
Three bobbins containing unknown leftovers do not establish 24 m of original six-strand floss. If one unopened 8 m skein is also present, only that package supplies a known nominal length. Keep unknown leftovers outside a guaranteed-quantity total. The six-strand tool accepts whole skeins and does not automatically estimate partially used bobbin lengths.
Make replenishment specific
Before buying a replacement, read the retained identity and check that the listing is for the same family and package form. A matching-looking blue in an organizer photograph is insufficient. If a bobbin has lost its label, record identity as uncertain rather than assigning a manufacturer color from this site artwork. We provide no calibrated identification service.
