Record the actual package

Save manufacturer, family, color code and any lot or batch field printed on the thread or fabric. Do not manufacture a lot number when the seller or package does not expose one.

Keep claims attributed

DMC’s standard floss page makes color-matching and colorfastness statements. Those are manufacturer claims, not results from our comparison of delivered lots or a test of every material in a mixed project.

Ask before a critical reorder

If a project needs a close match, ask the seller what lot information can be checked and compare actual material before committing. A shared color name does not prove every finish or source is identical.

Make a practical project record

If a package carries a lot or production identifier, save it beside the exact family and color. If no identifier is present, record that fact rather than inventing one. Buying enough for a project may reduce later replacement uncertainty, but it does not establish that separate packages will be visually identical.

Ask a question the seller can answer

Instead of requesting a universal guarantee that every future skein matches, ask whether the selected items carry a visible lot field and whether matching identifiers can be supplied for this order. If the seller cannot check, record that limitation. Do not invent a production code from a barcode or assume that all numbers on a band have the same meaning.

A project log for later replenishment

Keep one original label or a clear private record with manufacturer, family, color, quantity, purchase date and supplier. If the package exposes a lot field, transcribe it exactly. If you later add another order, keep the two orders distinct until you have checked the actual material. This log documents identity and sourcing; it is not a laboratory color-matching report.

Keep claims attributed

A maker colorfastness statement concerns its stated product and conditions. It does not establish how a different trim, printed fabric, backing or metallic thread behaves in the same finished object. Refer to the complete project care guidance before a treatment. We have not performed a side-by-side comparison of lots or a wash trial to extend the manufacturer claim.

Before you decide

  • Keep family, color/SKU and actual quantity
  • Separate nominal, usable and assumed measurements
  • Read component care and current seller conditions
