Name the required spaces

A design can need extra fabric for hooping, framing, seams or finishing. Enter the margins specified by your project or your own plan; the tool does not invent one universal allowance.

Do not force a fit

A round hoop’s nominal diameter is not a promise that any rectangular design of that width fits with adequate working space. Compare the actual stitched rectangle and the holder’s real usable area.

Keep the example hypothetical

Our 140 by 112 stitch example is arithmetic, not a copied pattern or a tested hoop project. We have not stitched, framed or washed it and do not guarantee a final fit.

Check the complete working setup

A hoop diameter is not the only space requirement. The cut needs enough accessible fabric for your chosen frame, handling and eventual finish. Our geometric margin is an input, not a hoop-fit certification. Confirm the actual hoop opening and any frame-clamping needs before deciding how much edge fabric to retain.

Check the corners of a rectangle

A 10 x 8 in stitched rectangle has a diagonal of about 12.81 in, since the square root of 10²+8² is 12.81. A round 10 in opening therefore cannot contain the whole rectangle simply because its width is 10 in. This is a geometry illustration for viewing the whole design at once, not a claim about a specific hoop or about whether a project can be repositioned while working.

Working space and finishing space differ

You may move a hoop during stitching, yet still need edge fabric for a final mount, seam or frame. List these purposes separately before choosing your margin. The tool accepts one equal margin on all edges; it does not assign different top, bottom or side allowances. If your finishing instructions are asymmetric, calculate those dimensions separately instead of forcing them into the equal-margin example.

Choose the holder after the cut plan

Take the stitched rectangle, the proposed cut dimensions and the actual holder opening to the seller or maker. Ask about the fabric needed for secure holding and the planned finish. Do not infer the inner usable opening from a photograph or a product-name diameter alone. We have not checked a named hoop model or physically mounted the example.

Before you decide

  • Keep family, color/SKU and actual quantity
  • Separate nominal, usable and assumed measurements
  • Read component care and current seller conditions
