DMC describes its standard six-strand cotton floss as 8 meter/8.7 yard skeins whose strands separate. The 8 meters describes the original six-strand bundle length, not 48 meters of that same bundle.

Name the theoretical result

Separating all six strands and regrouping two at a time gives 24 meters of aggregate two-strand length before waste. It does not give 24 meters of six-strand floss or a guaranteed continuous piece.

Keep the limits visible

The strand tool models divisible six-strand floss only. Cutting, joins, tails and working loss can reduce practical yield. We have not measured stitching consumption or guaranteed that a skein finishes a project.

Record the bundle first

For a purchase list, write 8 m six-strand beside each skein before choosing a working strand count. A two-strand aggregate of 24 m can be useful for arithmetic, but cutting a skein into working lengths creates separate pieces. Keep any allowance for starts, ends and discarded thread explicitly user-chosen.

A purchase example you can audit

Suppose your own materials list calls for two unopened standard 8 m skeins. That is 16 m of original six-strand floss. If every strand were separated and regrouped into pairs, you could describe 48 m of aggregate two-strand material before losses. It would be wrong to record 48 m of unopened floss in your inventory. Keep both fields if you need both views:16 m original bundle, and 48 m theoretical working pairs.

Choose inputs in this order

First confirm that the selected product really is divisible six-strand floss. Enter its original package length, then the number of whole skeins, then the working strand count. Only after those are correct should you add a personal loss assumption. The tool permits one, two, three or six working strands because those divide the six-strand bundle evenly; it does not allocate leftover strands for a four-strand setup.

When the result cannot decide the order

Neither a design stitch count nor a finished image establishes how much thread your own technique will consume. Different starts, tails and stitch routes are not modeled. If an authorized pattern provides a specific materials list, use that exact family and quantity as a separate source. If it does not, the aggregate calculation is a bookkeeping aid rather than evidence that one or two skeins will finish the design.

Before you decide

  • Keep family, color/SKU and actual quantity
  • Separate nominal, usable and assumed measurements
  • Read component care and current seller conditions
