Read both declarations
DMC gives 8 meters/8.7 yards for its standard floss. Exact conversion of 8 meters is about 8.749 yards; the printed 8.7 is a rounded product declaration, not a separate length test.
Use a consistent denominator
When normalizing the selected skein price, keep whether the denominator came from the manufacturer’s meter value or the retailer’s listed yard value. Do not silently alternate them to create a saving.
Do not infer a spool
A skein, ball and cone can contain different amounts. Save the exact package and article number rather than assuming every item with the same color code contains 8 meters.
Preserve the displayed unit
A listed 8.7 yd skein converts mathematically to 7.95528 m using 0.9144 m per yard. DMC also describes its nominal skein as 8 m. Those rounded declarations need not be forced into identical numbers. Compare offers with the same stated denominator and keep the source of each length visible.
Use one conversion route consistently
A yard is 0.9144 m. If two shops both quote the same exact selected product in yards, compare their yard denominators without converting one and retaining the other. If you need meters for your own inventory, multiply the listed yards by 0.9144 and label the result as a conversion from the retailer value. A manufacturer nominal declaration can remain alongside it as a separate field.
Small rounding is not a missing-thread finding
The difference between a nominal 8 m declaration and a rounded 8.7 yd declaration is not evidence that a delivered package is short. This site has not measured one. To raise an actual package discrepancy, you would need the exact label, appropriate measurement method and seller or maker response. A calculator converting rounded catalog numbers cannot supply that physical evidence.
A useful order-line record
Record product family, article or SKU, color, packages ordered, declared length per package and the source unit. Then calculate the total in that same unit. Two 8.7 yd skeins are 17.4 listed yards; that statement is transparent even if you separately retain the maker nominal 16 m total. Do not mix a per-skein price with a total length for several skeins.
