Read the selected cut
A quarter-yard strip commonly preserves the fabric’s usable width with a short length; fat-quarter offers use a different cut shape. Verify actual dimensions rather than relying on the name alone.
Check the rectangle
A required 14 by 12 inch piece cannot be approved from total area alone. Both dimensions and any rotation restrictions matter, as do selvages, grain and finishing allowances.
Keep seller increments separate
The cutting tool uses your chosen order increment as an assumption. It does not establish that a seller supplies continuous cuts, quarter-yard quantities or a particular precut dimension.
Ask for both dimensions
A fat quarter and a quarter-yard strip may contain similar nominal area while having different shapes. The exact width of the source fabric and the seller cutting method determine the actual dimensions. Before a cut plan, request the stated rectangle dimensions; do not replace every fat quarter with an assumed universal square.
Why equal area may fail
In a hypothetical 44 in-wide cut, a quarter-yard strip has dimensions 44 x 9 in before any usable-width exclusions. A different 18 x 22 in precut has the same 396 square-inch area. The 18 x 22 in rectangle can contain a 14 x 12 in piece without rotation, while 44 x 9 in cannot contain that same 14 x 12 in rectangle in either orientation. These are geometry examples, not verified dimensions of a selected precut offer.
Check the exact precut listing
Ask for both actual cut dimensions, the included number of pieces, the selected color or assortment and whether selvages count within the stated size. A bundle name alone does not establish those details. If the project requires several matching rectangles, confirm that the individual cuts—not just the total bundle area—can supply them.
Do not apply yardage policy automatically
A seller may offer yardage and precuts under different order and return conditions. Our selected Kona listing is yardage; this record does not verify a fat-quarter version or a quarter-yard minimum for that SKU. The planner order increment is user-selected and hypothetical until the actual seller confirms its continuous-cut and increment policy.
Before you decide
- Keep family, color/SKU and actual quantity
- Separate nominal, usable and assumed measurements
- Read component care and current seller conditions
