Check the complete article

The priced 117UA-310 is a standard six-strand skein. A cone using the same black color can contain a very different amount. Keep the package article and length rather than substituting the familiar color number.

Keep mass and length apart

A package may state weight as well as length. Without a verified product-specific relationship, mass does not supply meters; this reference does not infer a universal cotton density or linear weight.

Avoid a stock shortcut

Count unopened packages with their actual declared quantities. A partly used spool or bobbin needs a measured or explicitly estimated remainder, not a full-package assumption.

Compare the actual selling unit

A cone, spool and skein describe presentations, not interchangeable quantities. Find the listed length, the number of units included and the exact thread construction. If a seller provides mass without length, do not estimate meters from another thread fiber or thickness. Leave the length-based price unavailable until a valid denominator is supplied.

Build a package-level comparison

For each candidate, record intact package length, number of packages, construction, color and price. Calculate total original length as package count times declared length before calculating a unit price. A cone with more thread may have a lower original-length unit price, but that alone does not establish the best order size for your project or a match to another construction.

A numerical inventory example

Two unopened packages declared 8 m each provide 16 m nominal original length. A separate bobbin with a privately measured 3 m would bring that record to 19 m if it is truly the same original six-strand construction. An unmeasured bobbin cannot supply that 3 m field. The whole-skein tool intentionally does not infer or accept fractional skein stock as a measured remainder.

Leave weight-only length unknown

A fabric area weight such as the Kona maker 4.35 oz per square yard describes a different quantity from thread package length or a cut net weight. It does not create a meter conversion for a cotton skein. Even a thread net mass would need an appropriate product-specific linear relationship before a length could be inferred; none is established here.

Before you decide

  • Keep family, color/SKU and actual quantity
  • Separate nominal, usable and assumed measurements
  • Read component care and current seller conditions
